Salient Highlights of Census of Odisha:-
The Population of Orissa according to the 2011 census stands at about 41 million, making it the 11th most populated state in India. The state makes up about 3.4% of the country’s population a figure which was about 3% during the last census in 2001. The state is spread over an area of about 150000 sq. km. making it the 9th largest state in the country in terms of area. The density of population per sq. Km. is about 260 and fairly below the national average. The state has a growth rate of about 14% which is below the national average by a good three points. The population of the state is rising considerably due to rapid efforts towards development and progress. The literacy rate in the state is about 73% a figure that has improved tremendously in the last few years due to the consistent efforts of the government. The government has to however press further if Orissa has to stand with some of the major states in the country. The sex ratio in Orissa is a healthy 978 and it has never been a state that has seen a major fall in this figure. Some major political and social issues have plagued the state for a long time now and these internal conflicts have pulled the state down on a number of occasions.
Orissa Population 2011:-
As per details from Census 2011, Orissa has population of 4.2 Crores, an increase from figure of 3.68 Crore in 2001 census. Total population of Orissa as per 2011 census is 41,974,218 of which male and female are 21,212,136 and 20,762,082 respectively. In 2001, total population was 36,804,660 in which males were 18,660,570 while females were 18,144,090. The total population growth in this decade was 14.05 percent while in previous decade it was 15.94 percent. The population of Orissa forms 3.47 percent of India in 2011. In 2001, the figure was 3.58 percent.
Orissa Literacy Rate 2011:-
Literacy rate in Orissa has seen upward trend and is 72.87 percent as per 2011 population census. Of that, male literacy stands at 81.59 percent while female literacy is at 64.01 percent. In 2001, literacy rate in Orissa stood at 63.08 percent of which male and female were 75.35 percent and 50.51 percent literate respectively. In actual numbers, total literates in Orissa stands at 26,742,595 of which males were 15,089,681 and females were 11,652,914.

Total area of Orissa is 155,707 sq. km. Density of Orissa is 270 per sq km which is lower than national average 382 per sq km. In 2001, density of Orissa was 236 per sq km, while nation average in 2001 was 324 per sq km.
Orissa Sex Ratio:-
Sex Ratio in Orissa is 979 i.e. for each 1000 male, which is below national average of 940 as per census 2011. In 2001, the sex ratio of female was 972 per 1000 males in Orissa.
Orissa Religious Data:-
Hinduism is majority religion in state of Orissa with 93.63 % followers. Christianity is second most popular religion in Orissa state with 2.77 % following it. In Orissa state, Islam is followed by 2.17 %, Jainism by 0.02 %, Sikhism by 0.05 % and Buddhism by 0.05 %. Around 1.14 % stated ‘Other Religion’, approximately 0.18 % stated ‘No Particular Religion’.
Orissa Urban Population 2011:-
Out of total population of Orissa, 16.69% people live in urban regions. The total figure of population living in urban areas is 7,003,656 of which 3,625,933 are males and while remaining 3,377,723 are females. The urban population in the last 10 years has increased by 16.69 percent. Sex Ratio in urban regions of Orissa was 932 females per 1000 males. For child (0-6) sex ratio the figure for urban region stood at 913 girls per 1000 boys. Total children (0-6 age) living in urban areas of Orissa were 747,324. Of total population in urban region, 10.67 % were children (0-6). Average Literacy rate in Orissa for Urban regions was 85.75 percent in which males were 90.72% literate while female literacy stood at 74.31%. Total literates in urban region of Orissa were 5,364,680.
Orissa Rural Population 2011:-
Of the total population of Orissa state, around 83.31 percent live in the villages of rural areas. In actual numbers, males and females were 17,586,203 and 17,384,359 respectively. Total population of rural areas of Orissa state was 34,970,562. The population growth rate recorded for this decade (2001-2011) was 83.31%. In rural regions of Orissa state, female sex ratio per 1000 males was 989 while same for the child (0-6 age) was 946 girls per 1000 boys. In Orissa, 4,525,870 children (0-6) live in rural areas. Child population forms 12.94 percent of total rural population. In rural areas of Orissa, literacy rate for males and female stood at 79.65 % and 59.95 %. As per data released by Govt. of India for Census 2011, Bhubaneswar is an Urban Agglomeration coming under category of Class I UAs/Towns. Bhubaneswar city is governed by Municipal Corporation and is situated in Bhubaneswar Urban Region. The total population of Bhubaneswar UA/Metropolitan region is 886,397. The male population of which is 468,577 while female population is 417,820.
- Bhubaneswar Literacy Rate 2011:-
The literacy rate of Bhubaneswar Agglomeration is 91.72% which is higher than National Urban average of 85 %. Literacy rate for male and female for Bhubaneswar stood at 94.58 % and 88.52 % respectively. Total literates in Bhubaneswar UA were 733,689 of which males were 400,235 and remaining 333,454 were females.
- Bhubaneswar Child Population 2011:-
The children (0-6 age) population of Bhubaneswar UA is around 9.76 % of total Bhubaneswar UA population which is lower than National Urban average of 10.93 %. Total children in Bhubaneswar Urban region were 86,509 of which male were 45,386 while remaining 41,123 childs were female.

Cuttack Urban Region:-
As per data released by Govt. of India for Census 2011, Cuttack is an Urban Agglomeration coming under category of Class I UAs/Towns. Cuttack city is governed by Municipal Corporation and is situated in Cuttack Urban Region. The total population of Cuttack UA/Metropolitan region is 653,149. The male population of which is 338,788 while female population is 314,361.
- Cuttack Literacy Rate 2011:-
The literacy rate of Cuttack Agglomeration is 90.94% which is higher than National Urban average of 85 %. Literacy rate for male and female for Cuttack stood at 93.69 % and 87.98 % respectively. Total literates in Cuttack UA were 537,424 of which males were 286,718 and remaining 250,706 were females.
- Cuttack Child Population 2011:-
The children (0-6 age) population of Cuttack UA is around 9.52 % of total Cuttack UA population which is lower than National Urban average of 10.93 %. Total children in Cuttack Urban region were 62,157 of which male were 32,751 while remaining 29,406 childs were female.

As per data released by Govt. of India for Census 2011, Raurkela is an Urban Agglomeration coming under category of Class I UAs/Towns. Raurkela city is governed by Industrial Township and is situated in Raurkela Urban Region. The total population of Raurkela UA/Metropolitan region is 552,239. The male population of which is 289,925 while female population is 262,314.
- Raurkela Literacy Rate 2011:-
The literacy rate of Raurkela Agglomeration is 85.91% which is higher than National Urban average of 85 %. Literacy rate for male and female for Raurkela stood at 90.58 % and 80.75 % respectively. Total literates in Raurkela UA were 423,179 of which males were 234,132 and remaining 189,047 were females.
- Raurkela Child Population 2011:-
The children (0-6 age) population of Raurkela UA is around 10.80 % of total Raurkela UA population which is lower than National Urban average of 10.93 %. Total children in Raurkela Urban region were 59,635 of which male were 31,442 while remaining 28,193 childs were female.
- Raurkela Sex Ratio 2011:-
The sex ratio of female to male in Raurkela UA was found lower with figure of 905 females against national urban average of 926 females per 1000 males. For children (0-6 age), girls were 897 per 1000 boys in Raurkela Urban region against national average of 902 girls per 1000 boys.
